Ballet shoes are one of the most important pieces of kit a dancer will own. The right fit affects technique, comfort, and how quickly a student progresses.

Canvas vs Leather Ballet Shoes

Both materials work well. Knowing the difference helps you choose confidently.

  • Canvas is lightweight and breathable. It moulds to the foot quickly and suits everyday class wear.
  • Leather is more durable and holds its shape longer. Good for dancers who go through shoes fast or prefer a firmer feel.
  • The Dansoft Childrens Leather Ballet Flat is a trusted choice for younger students. Soft leather, excellent fit, long-lasting.
  • The Elemental Reflex Performance Leather comes with pre-sewn ribbons. One less job for busy dance parents.

Full Sole vs Split Sole

  • Full sole supports the whole foot. Best for beginners building strength and technique.
  • Split sole shows the arch more clearly and allows greater flexibility. Better suited to intermediate and advanced dancers.
  • Ask your teacher before switching from full sole to split sole. Timing matters.

Getting the Fit Right

Ballet shoes fit snugly, but the toes should not be curled or cramped. Fit them in the afternoon when feet are slightly larger. Allow a small amount of growing room for children, but not so much the shoe wrinkles excessively across the top.

  • Most brands size smaller than street shoes. Go up if you are between sizes.
  • Elastic and ribbons should be sewn before the first class. Check with your studio for placement guidance.
  • Replace shoes when the sole wears thin or the drawstring no longer holds a clean line around the foot.

Ballet Shoe Accessories

A few small additions make a difference at the barre and beyond.

  • Ballet Shoe Ribbon in matching colours keeps everything looking polished for concerts and exams.
  • Ballet Shoe Hair Clips are a sweet finishing touch for younger dancers.
  • Ballet Shoe Jewellery Sets make a thoughtful gift for a dancer at any level.

Ballet Shoes — Frequently Asked Questions

For beginners, a full-sole canvas or leather ballet shoe gives firm support while the foot builds strength. Brands like Bloch, Capezio, and Wear Moi are all reliable choices available at Total Dance Australia. Canvas shoes are lightweight and easy to wash, making them ideal for children and recreational dancers.

Canvas ballet shoes are lightweight, breathable, and mould to the foot quickly, making them the most popular choice for class. Leather shoes are more durable and hold their shape longer, which suits frequent wearers. Both are stocked at Total Dance Australia across adult and children's sizes.

Ballet shoes generally size differently from street shoes. Measure the foot length and check each brand's size chart, as Bloch, Capezio, and Wear Moi all use slightly different scales. It is common to size down by one to two sizes from a standard street shoe size. When in doubt, contact our team for guidance.

Full-sole shoes have a continuous sole that runs the length of the foot, providing support and resistance that helps beginners build foot strength. Split-sole shoes have two separate sole sections at the ball and heel, allowing the arch to flex more freely. Split-sole styles are generally preferred by intermediate and advanced dancers.

Yes. Many of our ballet shoe styles come in multiple width fittings including narrow, standard, and wide. Bloch in particular offers an extensive width range. Filter by brand on the collection page or contact us if you need help finding the right fit.

Allow ballet shoes to air out after each class rather than storing them in a sealed bag. Canvas shoes can be hand-washed in cold water with mild detergent and air-dried flat. Leather shoes can be wiped with a damp cloth and conditioned occasionally. Avoid direct heat as it can warp the sole.
